Dust

by Fiona McGee with Bambi Northwood-Blyth

DUST is the second collection from MANIAMANIA and visits the iconography of ancient Egypt and the aesthetic, mood and music of pop deity David Bowie. This film, Part 1 of 2, has derived inspiration from a 1969 image of a young Bowie dressed as a Sphinx by photographer Brian Ward, and imagery from backstage footage of Ziggy Stardust....

Dust

In MANIAMANIA's second collection DUST, bronze and silver metals are cast to enshrine crystal stones of Black Tourmaline and Aquamarine across a range of rings, cuffs, earrings, charms and neckpieces. Oscillating between two allusions like a pendulum, the collection visits the iconography of ancient Egypt and the evolving aesthetic, mood and music of pop deity David Bowie.

Inspirations are derived directly from the icon - an image of a young Bowie dressed as a Sphinx in 1969 by photographer Brian Ward, the fabled story of how the color of one of his eyes was changed when hit by a hand with a heavy ring, his fascination with Egyptology, aspects of the fi lm, Labyrinth, and lyrics from the song Rebel, Rebel. The Perception eye ring and bangle are intentionally symbolic of both the changed eye colour as well as the eye motif in Egyptology. Lyrics are inscribed on the Rebel signet ring, the Labyrinth tri-ring emulates the crystal ball and Escher-like stairs in the film with the same name. the occult symbolism of eye motifs, hieroglyphics, pyramids, and crystal balls transcend and unexpectedly combine with the candid nature of pop. A modern collection of new world artifacts, MANIAMANIA's handmade treasures lie waiting for discovery under a blanket of dust. Bambi Northwood-Blyth features in the campaign by photographer Stephen Ward and two short films by director Fiona McGee, which encapsulate MANIAMANIA's otherworldly aesthetic.
